Craft uses your phone’s location while you record so each recording lands on the right job without anyone typing anything. If location access is off, the recording still saves and still gets scored — it just arrives with no location, and its Location panel in Craft reads “Not captured.”
What Craft Uses Location For
- Matching recordings to jobs — Craft matches on time, date, user, and location. Location is usually what breaks the tie between two appointments on the same afternoon.
- Showing where the visit happened — the recording detail shows a map of the visit, and how far the stop was from the job address.
- Nearby jobs when you start recording — the job picker puts the closest appointments at the top.
Craft only reads your location while a recording is running. The app asks for While Using the App access — never background or “Always” access — and stops reading location as soon as you save.
Turn It On
Open Settings
On your iPhone, open the Settings app.
Find Craft
Scroll down to the list of apps and tap Craft.
Tap Location
Tap Location. If it currently reads “Never,” that is why your recordings have no location.
Choose While Using the App
Select While Using the App. Craft never needs “Always.”
Turn on Precise Location
Turn Precise Location on. Without it, iOS hands Craft an approximate area rather than a point, which is often too coarse to tell two nearby jobs apart.
If Craft has no Location row at all, the app has never asked for it. Start a recording once — Craft asks the first time — then come back to Settings to confirm.
Open Settings
On your phone, open the Settings app.
Go to Apps
Tap Apps, then Craft. On Samsung phones this is Apps → Craft; on Pixel phones it is Apps → See all apps → Craft.
Open Permissions
Tap Permissions, then Location.
Allow while using the app
Choose Allow only while using the app.
Turn on precise location
Turn Use precise location on. Approximate location is too coarse to separate two jobs on the same street.
Also check that Location is on for the phone itself — swipe down from the top of the screen and confirm the Location tile is enabled. An app permission does nothing while the phone’s location is switched off entirely.
Confirm It Worked
Record a short test
Start a recording from the job site, let it run for a minute, and save it.
Open the recording in Craft
Go to the Recordings tab and open the recording you just made.
Check the Location panel
On the Summary tab, the Location panel should show a map of the visit instead of “Not captured.”
Location is captured at the moment of recording, so turning the permission on does not add location to recordings that were already saved. It applies from the next recording onward.
Still Says “Not Captured”
The app is out of date
Older builds of the Craft app never sent location at all. Update Craft from the App Store or Play Store, then record a test.
The permission was denied more than once
On iPhone, repeated denials stop the app from asking again — the only way back is the Settings steps above. Android behaves the same way after two denials.
Low Power Mode or battery saver
Aggressive battery saving can stop location updates mid-recording. The recording still saves; the trail may be short or empty. Turn battery saver off for a visit and record a test.
The recording came from somewhere else
Recordings uploaded from a computer, or created by an integration rather than the Craft app, never had a phone attached and will not show a Location panel at all.
